About Liz:  Liz the founder of Book Art Studios, has been teaching in a variety of roles for over 40 years! She is still as passionate and engaged in the art of teaching as she was when she began her teaching life as an early childhood educator in her late teens. She’s fun and encourages her students to play, explore and experiment with ideas and concepts.
Liz loves making books so much she writes about how to make them and is the proud author of five published books:
  • One Small Drop
  • DIY Notizbüchlein
  • DIY Notebooks Made Easy
  • ReCreate
  • Dyed & Gone to Heaven
Born in Manchester, UK Liz made New Zealand her home over 30 years ago. She works as a full time artist from her home studio in West Auckland. A proud Mum of a grown up daughter who left the nest to live in New York, so travel is very much on her ‘to do’ list.
Liz is known for her thirst to experiment and go deeper into her love of bookmaking and dyeing paper. It is the repetition of repeatedly working with the same materials that has brought about some of the most outstanding results. Liz’s papers and handmade books are highly sought after and sell out every time a new collection is put up for sale.
Liz’s all time favourite quote from the film Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium is:
“Your life is an occasion. Rise to it.”
So roll up your sleeves, put those aprons on, Liz is coming to a Lake near you!

Class 1: Dyed & Gone to the Lake

Dyed & Gone to the Lake promises to be a delicious adventure full of colour, surprises, magic and delight.

This class is highly experimental, and where some of the tips and tricks can be helpful and lead to certain outcomes, the experience lies largely in ‘what happens if I put this with that’. Liz has shared her passion for unique approach to dyeing paper for over ten years and is delighted to be teaching it in person for the very first time in the US at Scared Makers.

Liz will guide us through a fun filled day in which we’ll dye just about anything  we can get our hands on, so that you leave camp with an extraordinary collection of papers to use in a variety of projects. Some of your deliciously dyed papers will be used to create a simple but beautiful raw book (to keep that loose rhythm in play) for you to take home.

What’s great about this class is that a lot of the materials can be easily sourced, and locally bought. Once you have the basics, you can return to dyeing many times without it breaking the bank. And depending on what type of metal items you source means you will produce results no one else will. When students realise the full potential of this class and the artistic direction it can take you in, it truely is mind blowing.

Experience Level: Liz has taught this technique to beginners through to accomplished artists. As she will be in the class to help and guide, those who want help will be able to enjoy her attention and those who want to free wheel will be left to do so.
Supply List:
  • 3 or 4 old towels
  • Latex Gloves or similar if you want to protect your hands (washing up gloves are too thick)
  • Dyes (RIT Dyes are easy to find in the U.S.)
  • A variety of papers to use -- all kinds are encouraged and we will have some for you as well
  • At least 4 brushes (the bigger the better to paint the dye onto your paper)
  • Containers to put the dyes (and water) into (we will have some available as well)
  • Wear clothes you feel comfortable creating in
  • Wiping cloths for any accidents!
  • Rusty bits (these are things like rusted washers, nails, flat metal pieces or thin rods). The rustier the better. Pack them carefully so they don't leave stains on your clothes.
  • Something to scrape paper off your surface if it sticks (wallpaper scrapers are great for this).
Kit Fee: $30--  USD
Your kit fee will be due to the teacher at the start of class. It is easier if you bring cash in the exact amount of the fee.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Are the dyes fixed?
No,  mine aren’t, so any books/papers that get wet will run.
Is it a complicated technique?
It sure isn’t! There are various factors to it, and sometimes it takes a little experimenting to get the desired result but in no way is it complicated.
What can I use the papers for afterwards?
  • Pages in books
  • Wrapping paper
  • Tags
  • Scan it in and use it digitally
  • Cards - just to name a few ideas
Can I get a repetitive outcome?
What I love about this technique is the randomness aspect of it. You can do all the same things for a second piece of paper and get a totally different result, so no, it’s unlikely.
Does the dye stain?
Mine does. It's really hard to get off my hands and yet I still don’t use gloves!
